LONDON, Aug. 7—A new surrender ultimatum to Japan, backed by the threat of the atomic bomb, was forecast in the British press today and the question was raised whether the United States and Britain would see fit to share their secret with other Allied nations.

British experts on military, scientific and international affairs, busy making calculations on the effects of the awesome development, said the bomb would influence all future international relations and produced the “alarming problem” of how to control it.

“How far it will be possible or wise to diffuse generally over the world the knowledge of how to make these bombs poses a vitally important problem,” said Prof. Gilbert Murray, joint president of the League of Nations Union since 1938. “There are enormous difficulties in keeping it a secret of one or two nations.”

“One can see the argument on both sides,” Mr. Murray said, “but I feel the atomic bomb has produced a very interesting problem—and a very alarming one.”

Military experts said some of the great strategic issues which have been bones of contention among nations may take on an entirely new aspect. Security, they said, can no longer be defined by control of certain ports or canals, and a frontier on this or that river or mountain will not add an iota of strategic advantage in event of further conflict.

原文:

While meager U. S. disclosures said one bomb had hit with such devastating force the city was hidden in a towering cloud of dust, the Japanese talked of new “bombs.” Their use of the plural indicated the blast was so shattering they could not believe only one bomb had struck.

The Nipponese communique said a number of B-29’s made the attack with “considerable” destruction. The admission was typical of the Japanese habit of underestimating damage, because U. S. sources indicated the great cloud of dust that rose from Hiroshima might have contained vaporized buildings.

SINO-JAP WAR

A SKIRMISH at the Marco Polo Bridge on the outskirts of Peiping, on the night of July 7, 1937, flared into the Sino-Japanese war that has continued up to the present. Lacking trained troops and modern equipment, the Chinese fought against overwhelming odds.

Shanghai was taken in 1937, paving the way for the fall of Nanking and Hankow, Chinese “Pittsburgh”. The loss of Canton in October, 1938, closed China’s sea access to supplies.

Jap forces pushed on and captured most of China’s railways and great cities. Undaunted, the Chinese moved their industries far inland; fought on from Chungking.

Supplies were carried over the winding Burma Road until the Japs cut this route April 30, 1942. American airmen, however, flew equipment in from India and the Chinese carried on.

Battlelines see-sawed back and forth until Allied forces struck forward in Burma and China, captured strategic roadways and bases and drove the Japs back in many areas.

BACKGROUND OF WAR

WHEN Japan signed the Tripartite Pact with Italy and Germany in Berlin on Sept. 27, 1940, the probability that she would enter into the Second World War seemed remote.

In the months following, she continued to expand her spheres of influence in the Far East until finally the U. S. and Britain warned her that such policy endangered peace. But Japan paid little heed.

Then, as the possibility of war loomed larger, U. S. and Jap diplomats met in Washington to discuss the troubled situation.

A special Jap envoy, Saburo Kurusu, flew from Tokyo and, in company with Kichisaburo Nomura, Jap Ambassador to the U. S., held several meetings with State Secretary Cordell Hull in late November, 1941.

The talks continued into December. On the day that the Jap diplomats delivered their final note to Hull—Dec. 7—the Japs sent their carrier planes over Pearl Harbor and sneak-attacked a good part of the U. S. Fleet at anchor.

The infamous assault—carried out while peace discussions were going on—precipitated the war that U. S. and Britain had tried to avoid.

THE capture of Saipan and Tinian and the recapture of Guam in the Marianas paved the way for huge Superfortress raids on the Jap home islands.

An unprecedented rain of high explosive and incendiary bombs began to wipe out key enemy installations and cities.

Nipponese defenses proved inadequate to cope with the big armadas of the air and, in less than a year, large areas had been burned out in Tokyo, Yokohama, Osaka, Kobe, and other “high priority” cities on the bomb schedules of the B-29’s.

Japan’s secondary cities, which have felt the might of the Superforts on a smaller scale, are now open to increasing blows from the growing silvery air fleets of death.

AMERICAN strategy has followed the definite pattern of striking and taking key islands in western Pacific sweeps and allowing Jap forces on surrounding islands to “wither on the vine.”

From the Marshalls our forces moved to the Marianas and then slashed out in varied directions for the Volcanoes, Palaus, and Ryukyus.

Using these captured bases mighty U. S. naval units and air armadas struck at dwindling Jap defenses and the Nipponese home islands.

正文開頭即寫道:「Tokyo or one of Japan’s other great war industry cities is believed here today to be next on the list for atomic bomb destruction.」

本報〈Weapon Shakes Earth For 250 Miles In First Test〉所報導的民國34年(1945)7月16日試爆,即Trinity(「三位一體」)原子彈試爆,也是人類歷史上第一次核爆炸。

For 93 Years A Dependable Portsmouth Institution

第3頁〈THE ROAD BACK IN THE PACIFIC〉大型戰局圖則具有重要的圖像史料價值。
