歷史背景與道奇 WC 系列: 在二戰初期,美國陸軍主要使用 ½噸級的輕型卡車。隨著戰爭規模擴大,軍方需要載重能力更強、越野性能更好的通用車輛。民國30年(1941)末至民國31年(1942)初,道奇公司(Dodge)推出了 ¾噸 4x4 的 WC 系列(WC 取自原廠工程代碼,W 代表民國30年(1941)開發,C 代表半噸級距,雖然後來升級為 ¾噸,但仍沿用此代號)。該系列車輛配備了著名的 T-214 型 230立方英吋直列六缸平頭引擎,以其堅固耐用、高可靠性及優異的越野能力聞名,成為二戰同盟國軍隊的主力輕型戰術輪型車輛。

合約與產能: 封面上註明的合約編號 W398-QM-11420 與 W398-QM-11422 中的 "QM" 代表軍需署 (Quartermaster Corps),這是當時負責採購軍用車輛的單位。這些註冊編號證實了當時美國強大的工業製造能力,單一合約即可交付數以萬計的軍用卡車。

  1. 引擎蓋設計:M37 採用的是現代常見的「前掀式」引擎蓋;而 WC-51 則保留了二戰老車經典的「鷗翼式」(由中央向左右兩側掀開)設計。

  2. 後貨斗寬度:M37 的後貨斗線條是由駕駛室側邊平滑延伸至車尾;相比之下,WC-51 的後貨斗則明顯向左右兩側凸出於駕駛室之外。

  3. 備胎位置:M37(特別是 M37B1)的備胎架設於駕駛座車門外側(採可旋轉外推設計以便開啟車門),明顯凸出於車體外;而 WC-51 的備胎則內藏於車體線內,放置在駕駛座旁的專屬凹槽中。

  4. 加油孔位置:M37 的加油孔設計明顯凸出於車體表面;而 WC-51 的加油孔則平貼於車體鈑件上。

  5. 後斗蓋(尾門與篷布結構):M37 的後斗蓋設計為滿框延伸;WC-51 的後斗蓋區域則呈現向內縮的設計。

除了上述五大外觀辨識點外,WC 系列車頭造型較圓潤,頭燈獨立安裝,且部分車款駕駛室與車斗為一體式;而 M37 則車頭方正,頭燈內嵌於葉子板,駕駛室與貨斗為獨立分離設計(抗扭曲性佳),並全面導入了 24 伏特防水電氣系統與配備同步齒輪的改良型變速箱。

  • 法戈汽車公司 (Fargo Motor Corporation): 法戈原本是創立於民國2年(1913)的獨立車廠,後於民國17年(1928)被克萊斯勒 (Chrysler) 集團收購,成為其專責處理車隊銷售與商業合約的部門。在第二次世界大戰期間,克萊斯勒集團為了統籌龐大的政府與軍方採購訂單,利用「法戈」作為與政府簽訂合約的法人組織。因此,雖然這些軍用卡車實際上是由道奇 (Dodge) 工廠生產,但合約與官方技術手冊的出版方通常標示為法戈汽車公司。

  • 美國戰爭部 (War Department): 成立於清乾隆54年(1789),負責美國陸軍的組織、維持與作戰。手冊內頁的發布令由當時的陸軍參謀長喬治·馬歇爾 (George C. Marshall) 將軍授命簽發。戰爭部在民國36年(1947)後整併改組為現今的美國國防部 (Department of Defense)。

(b) Engage the clutch and accelerate the engine sufficiently to increase the engine speed so that the transmission gears can be meshed in the next lower gear without clashing.

(c) Then disengage the clutch and shift into the next lower gear. Practice will soon reveal how much the engine should be accelerated in step (b) in order to accomplish a smooth, silent shift to lower gears.


CAUTION: When shifting to a lower gear at any rate of vehicle speed, engage the clutch before allowing the engine to slow down. If the engine slows down and the clutch is then engaged, excessive strain will be applied to the clutch, transmission and drive line and breakage is very likely to occur.


49—Sand and Gravel

Drive slowly in loose dry sand or fresh thick gravel, even though the engine will propel the truck at a higher speed, because difficulty may be encountered in steering the truck due to the wheels sliding.

Loose sand or gravel under the tires is dangerous when rolled by the force of the truck. When approaching a sand or loose gravel road, slow down, because after driving on a smooth, hard-surfaced road, the truck will be moving too fast for good steering control on the soft road.

Some types of road have a strip of fresh loose gravel on one side and hard smooth surface on the other side. Never drive into such a road surface at high speed. The soft surface material has a tendency to pull the truck farther toward the side on which the soft material is laid.

When starting the truck in sand or loose gravel, release pressure on the clutch pedal slowly so as not to spin the wheels. Spinning the wheels causes them to work their way down into soft road surfaces and wears the tires unnecessarily.


50—Soft Terrain and Deep Mud

When a truck becomes mired in soft terrain or deep mud good judgment should be used if any attempt is made to drive the vehicle out under its own power. Any piece of mechanical equipment has its limitations. The axles, propeller shafts, transmission, clutch and engine will withstand a great amount of abuse to which these units should be subjected.

If the vehicle is pulling through soft mud and the driving wheels start spinning, the engine should not be raced and no attempt should be made to "jump" the vehicle out of the mud. Racing the engine usually results in digging the driving wheels deeper in the mud, and trying to "jump" the vehicle may lead to destruction of some part of the drive line such as the clutch, transmission, propeller shafts, or axles. When the vehicle is hopelessly mired in deep mud, it should be towed out by winch equipment (if so equipped) or by another truck.

51—Winch

The winch on the front of trucks so equipped operates by power from the truck engine. This power is transmitted through the truck transmission into a power take-off control unit mounted on the side of the transmission. This control unit can be shifted by the lever illustrated in Fig. 10 from neutral position to wind-up or unwind the cable when the truck clutch pedal is depressed. Power is transmitted to the winch (from the control unit) through a propeller shaft having two universal joints, one at each end of the shaft.


52—To Operate Winch

CAUTION: Always place the transmission gearshift lever in neutral and depress the truck clutch pedal before shifting the winch control unit.

To Hook On:

Disengage the clutch shifter fork handle at the winch by means of the short hand lever illustrated in Fig. 11 and pull out the cable. If cable is under a strain depress truck clutch pedal and move shifter lever to rear position after lifting safety catch on floor board, and use engine power to relieve strain on cable.


To Pull:

Engage clutch shifter fork as illustrated in Fig. 11, depress truck clutch pedal and shift control lever to forward position (Fig. 10), after lifting safety catch on floor board. Then release truck clutch pedal.

CAUTION: When using winch, operate the engine at a reasonable speed. High engine speeds are liable to damage the winch mechanism or cause other serious trouble. See Fig. 12.


To Stop:

Depress truck clutch pedal and shift control lever into neutral.


To Unwind Cable:

Depress truck clutch pedal, lift safety catch on floor board, shift control lever to rear position as illustrated in Fig. 10 and release truck clutch pedal.

49—沙地與礫石

在鬆散的乾沙或剛鋪設的厚礫石上應緩慢駕駛,即使引擎能以較高速度驅動卡車,但因為車輪滑動可能會導致車輛轉向困難。

輪胎下的鬆散沙子或礫石在卡車的重力滾壓下是危險的。當接近沙地或鬆散的礫石路面時,請減速,因為在平坦、堅硬的路面上行駛後,卡車在鬆軟路面上會移動得太快而無法進行良好的轉向控制。

某些類型的道路一側有新鋪的鬆散礫石,另一側則是堅硬平滑的表面。切勿高速駛入此類路面。鬆軟的路面材料容易將卡車進一步拉向鋪設鬆軟材料的那一側。

在沙地或鬆軟礫石上起步時,請緩慢釋放離合器踏板上的壓力,以免車輪打滑。車輪打滑會使其向下陷入鬆軟的路面中,並造成輪胎不必要的磨損。


50—鬆軟地形與深泥地

當卡車陷入鬆軟地形或深泥地時,若試圖依靠自身動力駛出,必須運用良好的判斷力。任何機械設備都有其極限。車軸、傳動軸、變速箱、離合器和引擎將承受這些部件理應能承受的大量嚴苛考驗。

如果車輛在軟泥中牽引前進且驅動輪開始打滑,則不應猛踩油門讓引擎空轉,也不應試圖讓車輛從泥地中「跳」出來。拉高引擎轉速通常會導致驅動輪在泥地中越陷越深,而試圖讓車輛「跳」出來可能會導致傳動系統的某些部件(如離合器、變速箱、傳動軸或車軸)損毀。當車輛無可救藥地陷入深泥中時,應由絞盤設備(如果配備)或另一輛卡車將其拖出。

51—絞盤

配備在卡車前部的絞盤由卡車引擎提供動力來運作。該動力透過卡車變速箱傳輸至安裝在變速箱側面的動力輸出控制單元。當踩下卡車離合器踏板時,可以透過圖 10 中所示的拉桿,將此控制單元從空檔位置切換為捲收或放出鋼纜。動力透過一根兩端各有一個萬向接頭的傳動軸,(從控制單元)傳輸至絞盤。


52—操作絞盤

注意:在切換絞盤控制單元之前,務必將變速箱排檔桿置於空檔並踩下卡車離合器踏板。

連接 (To Hook On):

透過圖 11 所示的短手柄,分離絞盤處的離合器撥叉手柄,並拉出鋼纜。如果鋼纜處於緊繃狀態,請踩下卡車離合器踏板,在抬起地板上的安全卡榫後將排檔桿移至後方位置,並利用引擎動力來釋放鋼纜上的張力。


牽引 (To Pull):

如圖 11 所示接合離合器撥叉,踩下卡車離合器踏板,在抬起地板上的安全卡榫後,將控制拉桿移至前方位置(圖 10)。然後釋放卡車離合器踏板。

注意:使用絞盤時,請以合理的轉速運轉引擎。引擎高轉速容易損壞絞盤機械裝置或導致其他嚴重故障。參見圖 12。


停止 (To Stop):

踩下卡車離合器踏板並將控制拉桿排入空檔。


放出鋼纜 (To Unwind Cable):

踩下卡車離合器踏板,抬起地板上的安全卡榫,將控制拉桿移至後方位置(如圖 10 所示),然後釋放卡車離合器踏板。

horn bracket, #3 left, the oil filler tube support bracket, #4 left, the ignition cable bracket, and the center rear nut holds the heat indicator tube clip.


See that the radio suppression bond strap from cylinder head right rear stud to dash is securely tightened. Refer to "Radio Interference Suppression" (Group 06—Electrical).


Tighten the cylinder head retaining nuts in the order shown in Fig. 7. Tighten all nuts evenly, with a suitable torque wrench (Fig. 8) to 52.5 to 57.5 foot lbs.


A final tightening and checking of the tension should be made after the engine has been run for some time and is still warm.


25—Valves and Springs—Removal

(a) Drain the cooling system.

(b) Remove the cylinder head (See Subject 24).

(c) Remove the right front engine inspection shield between the fender and the frame.

(d) Remove the fuel pump heat shield and the valve cover plates.

(e) Remove the valve locks after compressing the valve springs with a valve spring compressor and then lift out the valves. When removing the valve locks, take the necessary precaution to prevent dropping the locks into the oil pan.

It will be advantageous to have a board with 12 holes in it and place the valves in the board beginning with #1 valve and arrange them so that it will be possible to install them in the seats from which they are removed.

(f) Remove the valve springs and lock retainers by compressing the springs and pulling them out over the valve tappets, being careful not to drop the lock retainers in the oil pan.


Cleaning and Inspection

Clean the valves with a power driven wire brush until every particle of carbon has been removed

from heads and stems. Carefully inspect each valve for pit marks, burned spots, or cracks in the seat, or warped valve head. Check the valve stems for excessive wear with a 1" micrometer. The standard measurement for the valve stem is from .340" to .341". If stem wear is greater than .003" replace valve. Check end of valve stem for battered or out-of-shape condition.

Check valve guides for excessive clearance. If valve stems are within above limits and valve stems are loose in guides, then guides should be replaced.

Check valve spring tension with a coil spring tester (Fig. 9).

Spring pressure when compressed to 1¾"—40 to 45 lbs.

Spring pressure when compressed to 1½"—107 to 115 lbs.

Check valve tappets in guides and attempt to move tappets back and forth, sideways. If wear is quite noticeable, it will be necessary to replace tappets (see Subject 30). Inspect condition of tappet adjusting screws and if heads of screws show much wear from contact with valve stem, they should be removed and reground or a new set of screws installed.


26—Reconditioning Valves

Before reinstalling valves in engine, they should be refaced on a Valve Refacer (Fig. 10). To insure an accurate refacing job the refacer should be set to correspond to the 45° seats used in the Dodge engine. The grinding wheel should be trued before using. If inspection has shown ends of valve stems in poor condition, they should be trued up on the valve refacer using the V-Block attachment, (Fig. 11).

27—Valve Guide Replacement (Valves and Springs Removed)


Removal

Using tap and handle, cut threads in top of valve guide to be removed. A piece of rag carefully tucked around bottom of valve guide will prevent cuttings from tap entering engine. Screw puller in place (Fig. 12) and remove bushing.


Installation

When installing new guides, make sure the distance from the top of the cylinder block to the top of the valve guides is ⅞". See Fig. 13.

(接續前頁)...喇叭支架,左側第3號固定機油加注管支撐架,左側第4號固定點火線支架,而中央後方的螺帽則固定溫度指示管夾。


確認從汽缸蓋右後方螺栓連接至前圍板(防火牆)的無線電干擾抑制接地帶已牢固鎖緊。請參閱「無線電干擾抑制」(類別 06—電氣系統)。


按照圖 7 所示的順序鎖緊汽缸蓋固定螺帽。使用合適的扭力扳手(圖 8)將所有螺帽平均鎖緊至 52.5 至 57.5 呎磅(foot lbs)。


在引擎運轉一段時間且仍然處於溫熱狀態時,應進行最後的鎖緊與張力檢查。


25—氣門與彈簧—拆卸

(a) 排空冷卻系統。

(b) 拆下汽缸蓋(參見主題 24)。

(c) 拆下位於葉子板與車架之間的右前引擎檢查護板。

(d) 拆下汽油幫浦隔熱板與氣門室蓋板。

(e) 使用氣門彈簧壓縮器壓縮氣門彈簧後,取下氣門鎖片,然後將氣門向上拔出。拆卸氣門鎖片時,請採取必要的預防措施,防止鎖片掉入油底殼中。

建議準備一塊鑽有 12 個孔的木板,從第 1 號氣門開始將氣門依序放置在木板上排列好,這樣日後才能將它們安裝回原本拆下的氣門座位置,這會很有幫助。

...每一粒積碳。仔細檢查每個氣門的氣門座是否有凹坑、燒蝕斑點或裂紋,以及氣門頭是否翹曲。使用 1 吋分厘卡檢查氣門桿是否過度磨損。氣門桿的標準尺寸為 .340 吋至 .341 吋。如果氣門桿磨損超過 .003 吋,請更換氣門。檢查氣門桿尾端是否呈現受撞擊損壞或變形的狀況。

檢查氣門導管是否有過大的間隙。如果氣門桿在上述限制範圍內,但氣門桿在導管中仍然鬆動,則應更換導管。

使用螺旋彈簧測試儀檢查氣門彈簧張力(圖 9)。

壓縮至 1¾ 吋時的彈簧壓力—40 至 45 磅。

壓縮至 1½ 吋時的彈簧壓力—107 至 115 磅。

檢查導管中的氣門挺桿,嘗試前後、左右移動挺桿。如果磨損非常明顯,則需要更換挺桿(參見主題 30)。檢查挺桿調整螺絲的狀況,如果螺絲頭部因與氣門桿接觸而顯示出嚴重磨損,則應將其拆下並重新研磨,或者安裝一組新的螺絲。


26—氣門重修

在將氣門重新安裝回引擎之前,應在氣門研磨機上重修其門面(圖 10)。為確保精確的重修作業,研磨機應設定為與道奇引擎中使用的 45° 氣門座相對應。砂輪在使用前應先進行修整校正。如果檢查顯示氣門桿尾端狀況不佳,則應使用 V 型塊附件在氣門研磨機上將其修平(圖 11)。

27—氣門導管更換(氣門與彈簧已拆除狀態)


拆卸

使用絲攻與絞手,在要拆除的氣門導管頂部切削出螺紋。在氣門導管底部小心地塞入一塊碎布,可防止切削金屬屑從絲攻掉入引擎中。將拔取器螺絲旋入定位(圖 12)並拆下襯套(導管)。


安裝

安裝新導管時,確保從汽缸本體頂部到氣門導管頂部的距離為 ⅞ 吋。參見圖 13。

mately one half the maximum amperes noted on the name plate of the regulator or generator. While heating the regulator have the cover on the unit. The cover must be on the regulator when taking readings or when the unit is being heated by operation prior to taking readings because the cover forms part of the magnetic field and also helps retain the heat.


Caution: When removing and installing cover to make the various tests, extreme care must be exercised to prevent touching the cover on the circuit breaker causing a short circuit and damaging the regulator assembly. The best method is to disconnect the battery terminal each time the cover is removed and installed.


Always install the regulator cover with the name plate down. If the cover is installed upside down, the cover may touch the circuit breaker.


(a) Circuit Breaker Operation


The circuit breaker unit must operate within the limits shown under "Specifications" on page 06-52.

To test, connect positive lead of test ammeter to "B" terminal of regulator and negative lead to wire removed from "B" terminal. Connect the positive lead of voltmeter to the "A" terminal and negative lead to the ground of the regulator. See Fig. 16.

To adjust the contact closing voltage remove the cover and adjust the armature spring tension by adjusting the screw "A", Fig. 17, which holds the lower end of the spring. A very ac-


curate method of checking the contact closing voltage is by connecting a headphone (2000 ohms or higher) between the "A" and "B" terminals of the regulator and observe the voltage at which the click, caused by the closing of the contacts, is heard.

To adjust the contact opening amperage, adjust the contact point gap by raising or lowering the stationary contacts. In making this adjustment, be sure that the armature and the yoke do not make contact.

After adjusting, install the regulator cover and again test the circuit breaker operation.

There should always be .5 volts less voltage at which the circuit breaker closes than the voltage at which the voltage regulator operates.


(b) Voltage Regulator Calibration


The voltage regulator unit must operate within the limits shown under "Specifications" on page 06-52.

In hot climates (consistently above 95°F.), the voltage regulator may be set at the low limit. For example, at temperature of 120°F., the regulator may be set at 7.05 volts (6 volt systems) or 14.15 volts (12 volt systems). In cases where overcharging is still experienced, setting may be reduced 0.1 volt below the low limit setting. However, there must always be .5 volt difference between the operating voltage of the regulator unit and the circuit breaker closing voltage.

In making this test, an accurate voltmeter must be used. It should be connected to the regulator "B" terminal and to ground. See Fig. 18 for test connections.

decrease armature spring tension. Increasing the spring tension increases the voltage at which the unit will operate, while decreasing the tension decreases its operating voltage. This is done by adjusting the screw ("B" Fig. 17) which holds the lower end of the spring.

Replace the cover after making each adjustment and take a flash voltage reading by stopping the generator and noting the maximum voltage reading when the generator is immediately restarted.


(c) Current Regulator Calibration


The current limiting regulator must operate within the limits shown under "Specifications" on page 06-52.

Connect the test ammeter in series between the regulator "B" terminal and the battery. See Fig. 18.

By increasing the generator output with a lamp bank or other suitable resistance connected across battery on the battery side of the ammeter, the ampere output should read as noted on the name plate of the regulator under test with an allowable variation of plus or minus 1 ampere.

Its operation is adjusted by varying the armature spring tension. This is done by turning the adjustment screw ("C", Fig. 17) which holds the lower end of the spring.

After all adjustments are made, make a final test of all three units of the regulator to make sure that the adjustments are within specifications.


36—Regulator Bench Repairs


The regulator may be removed from the truck and tested and repaired by mechanics thoroughly trained in the servicing of electrical equipment and especially trained in the use of precision meters and gauges. It is not advisable to attempt to repair the regulator unless the proper tool equipment is available because the adjustment of regulator air gaps and contact point gap and spring tension necessitates special precision gauges without which satisfactory results cannot be obtained.

37—Visual Inspection


After removing the cover of the regulator and before making any tests or adjustments, it is recommended that a close visual inspection be given the regulator, with special emphasis being paid to the following points:

(a) Broken regulator seal.

(b) Evidence of burning or abnormal high temperature at the coils, contacts, insulation, external terminals or any other point. It is suggested that this test be made with a magnifying glass.

(c) Loose connections which result from poor soldering.

(d) Loose nuts on the bottom of the magnet cores, loose rivets or screws. All nuts and screws must have lock washers.

(e) Loose contacts.

(f) Misalignment of contacts.

(g) Bent armature either at the contact or hinge end. (The armature should be per-

警告 (Caution):在拆卸與安裝外蓋以進行各種測試時,必須極度小心,避免讓外蓋碰觸到斷路器而造成短路並損壞調節器總成。最好的方法是每次拆裝外蓋時,都先斷開電瓶接頭。


安裝調節器外蓋時,務必將有銘牌的一面朝下。如果外蓋安裝顛倒,可能會碰觸到斷路器。


(a) 斷路器運作


斷路器單元的運作必須在第 06-52 頁「規格」項下所示的限制範圍內。

測試時,將測試安培計的正極導線連接至調節器的「B」端子,負極導線連接至從「B」端子拆下的電線上。將伏特計的正極導線連接至「A」端子,負極導線連接至調節器搭鐵(接地)。參見圖 16。

(接續前頁)...減少電樞彈簧張力。增加彈簧張力會提高裝置的運作電壓,而減少張力則會降低運作電壓。這是透過調整固定彈簧下端的螺絲(圖 17 中的「B」)來完成的。

每次調整後都要蓋回外蓋,並透過停止發電機運轉,然後在發電機立即重新啟動時記錄最大電壓讀數,來讀取瞬時電壓讀數。


(c) 限流調節器校準


限流調節器的運作必須在第 06-52 頁「規格」項下所示的限制範圍內。

透過在安培計的電瓶側跨接一個負載燈箱或其他合適的電阻來增加發電機的輸出,安培計輸出的讀數應與受測調節器銘牌上標註的數值相同,允許誤差為正負 1 安培。

其運作是透過改變電樞彈簧張力來調整的。這是透過轉動固定彈簧下端的調整螺絲(圖 17 中的「C」)來完成的。

在完成所有調整後,對調節器的所有三個單元進行最終測試,以確保調整值皆在規格範圍內。


36—調節器工作台維修


調節器可從卡車上拆下,並由受過電氣設備維修嚴格訓練,且特別受過精密儀表與量具使用訓練的技師進行測試與維修。除非具備適當的工具設備,否則不建議嘗試維修調節器;因為調節器氣隙、接點間隙以及彈簧張力的調整都需要特殊的精密量具,若沒有這些量具將無法獲得令人滿意的結果。

37—目視檢查


在拆下調節器外蓋後且進行任何測試或調整前,建議對調節器進行仔細的目視檢查,並特別留意以下幾點:

(a) 調節器密封損壞。

(b) 線圈、接點、絕緣層、外部端子或任何其他部位有燒焦或異常高溫的跡象。建議使用放大鏡進行此項檢查。

(c) 銲接不良導致的連接鬆動。

(d) 磁鐵芯底部的螺帽鬆動、鉚釘或螺絲鬆動。所有螺帽與螺絲都必須備有鎖緊墊圈(防松墊圈)。

(e) 接點鬆動。

(f) 接點錯位(未對齊)。

(g) 在接點端或鉸鏈端有彎曲的電樞。(電樞應保持平直... 接續下一頁)
